Chapped lips are just an unfortunate thing we all have to deal with at some point. It doesn’t matter the season either. They can hit you just as hard in the summer as they can in the winter months. But there are things you can do to avoid chapped lips and help them heal if they hit you.
First of all, make sure you are staying hydrated! One of the first symptoms of dehydration is chapped lips. If your lips are really dry, it is a sign that you are thirsty and need more water. Take a cute water bottle with you everywhere as a reminder to drink up.
If your lips are dry and flaking, you might need to exfoliate more regularly to remove dead skin cells. You can make your own lip scrub or buy it. My favorite is from Lush because it is made from more natural ingredients and the Bubblegum flavor smells divine.
Keep a favorite lip balm with you at all times. I like to keep one at my desk and in my purse. Look for a lip balm or chapstick without too many chemicals and instead includes ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, olive oil or cocoa butter. If your lip balm has too many chemicals, it can actually dry out your lips even more. Always put on lip balm after you wash your face or shower for extra hydration.
Next, resist your urge to lick… your lips that is. When your lips are dry, your first instinct is to lick them to make them moist again, but your saliva actually dries them out worse. This can make them even more chapped and painful. When you have the urge to lick your lips, use a lip balm instead.
Lastly, eat your veggies for gorgeous lips. Eating healthy fruits and veggies can restore your body’s pH levels. If your pH levels are too acidic, it can cause chapped lips. If you have chapped lips, make sure to avoid spicy or salty foods which can irritate your lips and cause them to heal slower. A good way to get your fruits and veggies right away in the morning is to make a smoothie. Fill it up with yummy greens and fruits and sip your way to a healthy body and healthy skin.
